Wednesday, April 30

In the Bibby Financial Services Ireland Punchestown Gold Cup (5.30) at Punchestown on Wednesday, First Lieutenant has been beaten on all six starts, including this race last year, since winning the Betfred Bowl at Aintree last April and is becoming disappointing. He could only finish fourth of six, beaten 3¾ lengths, behind Silviniaco Conti when attempting to win the Betfred Bowl for a second time earlier this month, but that wasn’t a bad effort and first-time blinkers only have to eke out slight improvement for him to be a leading contender here.

Admittedly, his record of three wins from nineteen starts is nothing to shout about, but it may be unwise to write off a horse of his undoubted ability at the age of nine, especially under favourable conditions, and he should go well at the 6/1 on offer with Boylesports.
